about the artist
i am inspired by children's literature and story books, babies and children, the first day of school, classrooms, chocolate milk, the circus, carnivals, mermaids, gypsies, fortune tellers, sideshow banner art, hip hop, organic agriculture, urban culture, black folk, jewish folk, women, mothers...cupcakes, gardens, heirloom vegetables, and california's endless parade of cultural diversity and sunshine.
as an art educator, i have worked with students of all ages. my interests also include good old fashioned drawing & painting, from small works on paper to murals, and nearly every surface in between. i love watercolor-- it is unpredictable and delicate. watercolor also has the added benefit of being generally non-toxic, for me and the environment-- very important. but i do dabble in acrylic-- i like to squish paint around, and it squishes really good.
i was thrilled that my illustration was featured by Sacramento Earth Day 2008. it was such a kick to see my little watercolor painting pop up all over town...this fall, i will likely be teaching a watercolor class for arcade creek recreation and park district. please stay tuned for more details (but i think class will meet monday evenings for three hours once a week, for 6 weeks).
in other news, i think i will have a few pieces at deep art & yoga for second saturday. a big collaborative effort is being planned with local artist and friend janet simpson for a show at deep in october, which i am really quite excited about. the show will include works on paper (drawing & watercolor) and installation, as well as ceramic pieces by janet. super super excited.
this second saturday (august 9), there is a pretty good chance that some of my students from winterstein will have their work featured at deep as well; kudos to christine from deep for giving us a forum. :)
i hope that you enjoy my featured work- please stay tuned for more updates...
easy peacey,
dana
